This is a project about repetition, variation and transformation to investigate the idea of 2.5-dimensional space. Specifically, a simple repetitive diamond plate pattern was adopted as a primitive for a series of transformations involving variation and thickening. These transformations then led to the development of three ideas in the restriction of designing a new facade for a parking garage.

IDEA 1: Elongating and compressing the aperture of the pattern in a manner that responds to the different degrees of porosity in the parking structure produced a subtle undulating pattern or wave field.

IDEA 2: Introducing openings at multiple scales give the parking structure a new identity from various distances.

IDEA 3: Marking the entries by proposing a new canopy that becomes legible as one approaches the building obliquely or laterally.
